As I train clients on social media marketing, I am stunned at the number of people who ask me “why do I need a website when I have a Facebook business page?” I try not to let out an exasperate sigh as I go on to give them all the reasons why they need a business website first!
If you are serious about business, you invest in it.
Don’t skip the website because you think you can’t afford one. In reality, a business can’t afford NOT to have a website. Your website is your digital storefront, the cornerstone of your business. It is the place where potential customers look first for in-depth information on your company, products, services and people. This is where a potential customer will make the decision whether or not to do business with you. Your website is where you should be capturing leads and making sales. If you don’t have a website, people will deem you untrustworthy, unprofessional, and think you are small potatoes.
Use Facebook (and social media) to drive traffic to your site
You don’t make sales on social media. You find new audiences, build relationships and move people to action by driving them to your website for the sale. Facebook may be free and have a lot of benefits and it SHOULD be part of your online marketing strategy, (but only if your audience is on Facebook too). Sides Social can help you figure that out. However, Facebook has several drawbacks that only your website can overcome. You can’t put as much detail on Facebook as you can on your website. You don’t have complete control over your audience—not every fan of your page actually sees the content you post on a regular basis, and you don’t have complete control over your brand. At the end of the day, your page is branded as a Facebook page—it is not unique to your brand. Lastly, Facebook doesn’t have the comprehensive SEO control that your website does. Google still prefers a website URL over a social link.
Websites give you complete control
It’s your business, your baby, your brand. You know you want complete control over it and the only way you get that is through a website that is designed with creative freedom unique to you, one that fits your goals and tells your branded story. Your website, along with Google Analytics provides you with much better data and insight into your audience, traffic, behaviors, referrals than social media analytics can. People look for website!
